Those who approach the town of Coburg from the north see, illuminated in the distance, a picturesque silhouette above the treetops of the forest. Callenberg Castle, with its distinctive step gable and tower, has been in the possession of the Dukes of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha for 180 years. The neo-gothic ornaments, consisting of tracery and pointed arches, to this day define the bright character of the castle. Splendid furniture, porcelain and an extensive collection of paintings belonging to the family grace the rooms. The 400-year-old castle chapel is a particular highlight. Anyone who would like a taste of history can join a guided tour of the castle – about princes and princesses, dukes, kings and empresses from all over the world. After all, in the 19th century the Coburg ducal family grew illustrious and cosmopolitan thanks to their adroit marriage policy. So is it surprising that “Weddings at Callenberg Castle” enjoy great popularity today?
