Ellwangen Palace rises up impressively on a mountain outcrop above the former monastery town of Ellwangen. Originally built by Abbot Kuno I around 1200 as a castle and defensive bulwark for the protection of the monastery and the town, it was a representative residence of the abbots, and from 1460 the seat of the prince provosts.
