Goethe already admired the collection of paintings in the so-called “Freundschaftstempel” of the poet and collector Johann Wilhelm Ludwig Gleim (1719–1803), during his journey through the Harz Mountains in 1805. Gleim, who was in touch with almost every important poet of the late 18th century, made Halberstadt a literary centre, and what is more gathered together the biggest portrait-gallery of poets of his time. Next to the over 120 paintings of important contemporaries, books, letters and other remarkable exhibits bring the 18th century back to life.
