The basilica was built in the period 815–827 by Einhard, a scholar and architect who also wrote a biography of Charlemagne. He designed it as a three-nave basilica with three apses. In 1873 it was rediscovered, and, while not fully intact, it is one of the few remaining Carolingian buildings.
