Ronneburg Castle
Completely preserved, Ronneburg Castle was built on a steep basalt spur, and first mentioned in 1231. In the 16th century the castle was dismantled to a residence of the Earls of Ysenburg. Visit the upper courtyard with the 32 meters high tower with a renaissance décor and the interior rooms with high quality vaults as well as the well-house with its 96 meter deep well, which was driven into the basalt and completely lined with hewed sandstones and a large water wheel in order to draw the water with much difficulty. Worth seeing are also the weapons chamber with its mediaeval replica of weapons and armours, the lord chambers partially decorated by paintings in frescoes, the court chamber with its star vault, the 16th century historical castle kitchen.
