850 years ago, monks from the monastery at Maulbronn founded the Cistercian Monastery of Schöntal in the idyllic Jagsttal valley. The buildings, dating from mediaeval times to the baroque period, were enclosed by a protective wall and serve to underscore the monumental structure of the New Abbey with its magnificent staircase completed in 1745 and the gravestone of the famous knight Götz von Berlichingen in the cloister. The richly ornamented Cloister Church and the Chapel of the Holy Grave on the Hill of the Cross are of particular interest.
