The massive structure and the deep-set, dry moat with the drawbridge mark the transition of the medieval castle to a gothic renaissance castle. It was built from 1491 to 1497. The division of rooms, the stair tower, the so-called arched curtain windows and the cell vault with inner reticular figuration point to the influence of the master builder A. of Westphalia.
